The Royal Canadian Army Cadet training program consists of a number activities: the Star Level training program (weekly, on Tuesday evenings), extracurricular activities (such as the marksmanship team) and summer training. Learn more about this here.
The Star Level program is the regular training program, which takes place weekly on Tuesday evenings, and during exercises on weekends throughout from September - June. Cadets attend lessons on a variety of topics, including: drill, dress, deportment, citizenship, leadership, fitness, military familiarization, and more.
Cadets are grouped into Star Levels based on age. Training objectives build on what is learned in the earlier Star Levels. There are 5 Star Levels:
Star Level Officer: CV Speed
The aim of Green Star is to provide an Army Cadet with the introductory knowledge and practical experience required to participate in corps activities as a member of a team.
Star Level Officer: CI Gartshore
The aim of the Red star Program is to provide an Army Cadet with the basic theoretical knowledge and practical experience required to participate in cadet corps activities as a team member.
Star Level Officer: CV Ribchester
The aim of Silver Star is to provide an Army Cadet with the theoretical knowledge and practical experience required to participate in corps activities and appointments as a team leader.
Star Level Officer: CWO Chiasson
The aim of Gold Star is to provide an Army Cadet with the theoretical knowledge and practical experience required to participate in corps activities and appointments as a team leader.
Star Level Officer: CI Joe Langlois
The aim of Master Cadet is to provide an Army Cadet with the theoretical knowledge and practical experience required to participate in corps activities and appointments as an activity leader.
Cadets must actively participate in the Star Level training programs in order to earn each qualification. This includes a minimum attendance of 60% during regular training nights through the year, participation in required weekend training and the successful completion of tests. The more senior Star Levels have more tests.

A minimum attendance of 60% is required in a year in order to complete the Star Level, along with participation during a few required weekend exercises. Cadets are expected to inform us in advance of training nights even they are unable to attend, so that they can be excused.
Yes! When a cadet joins late (after age 12), they are fast-tracked to a Star Level that fits their age group. They will have to make up previous level requirements, like teaching a lesson or participate in an expedition, but will be in a star level with their peers.
Rank promotions are based in part on the successful completion of the Star Levels, and the fulfilment of other pre-requisites. Cadets are also evaluated on how well they are achieving the skills and competencies that are expected for the rank. Please see the ranks and promotion page for more details.
There are extracurricular activities that cadets in the Corps can participate in, such as the Corps marksmanship team and the flag party.
Throughout the Star Level program, cadets will participate in marksmanship training and will become familiar with the air rifle. In addition, cadets may try out for the Corps marksmanship team, which competes in local and regional air rifle competitions.
