Fitness is an important essential part of your lifestyle, and the cadet program has a focus on it. Throughout the training year we will have several Tuesday nights dedicated to sports and fitness, and being in shape is essential for expeditions and field training. Cadets may also attend sports & fitness summer training courses in order to lead activities back at the Corps.
All cadets must participate in the twice-per-year Cadet Fitness Assessment (CFA). This is held once at the start of the training year, and then again at the end of the training year. Participating in the CFA is a mandatory requirement of every Star Level, for rank promotions, attending expeditions, and summer training.
The Cadet Fitness Assessment helps the cadets track their personal fitness level, plan personal fitness programs and promote lifelong fitness.
There are three areas of fitness that are assessed: cardiovascular endurance; muscular strength; and muscular flexibility. This is tested with the:
20-metre shuttle run
Curl-ups
Push-ups
Shoulder stretch
Back-saver sit and reach
The CFA Incentive Program allows cadets to see where they are physically, and encourages them to continue to work on their fitness. There are four incentive levels:
Bronze
Silver
Gold
Excellence
For each test, there are different thresholds for each incentive level. This is differs based on age and sex. The CFA is scored based on the lowest score from the 5 tests, after removing the lowest score from the four muscle-related tests.
